Best Practices: Guidance on Artificial Intelligence / Bots (AI)
It is the opinion of the OA Foot Steps Security Committee that action be taken in all recovery meetings to protect the anonymity of our members. AI bots and similar note-taking apps, including but not limited to meeting summarizers, and any app that captures and stores meeting data (audio, video, or text), are not permitted in OA recovery meetings.
These AI devices have the ability to record during the meeting, therefore causing a breach of anonymity. Ensuring anonymity is part of our Traditions and these apps break that Tradition.
How to Identify an Artificial Intelligence Presence:
Their name may contains “AI” or “Notetaker” – for example, “read.ai”
Their behavior might be suspect – for example, displays recording symbol in the participants square (see blue arrow below).

What Your Recovery Meeting Can Do:
- The person responsible for letting participants in from the waiting room must ensure that AI bots are not admitted to the meeting. If they are already in the room, move them to the waiting room.
- Please consider including the following statement in your meeting announcements: “To ensure anonymity, Artificial Intelligence bots and note-taking apps are not permitted in this meeting.”
- If you personally utilize any of these apps, please disable them before attending a recovery meeting.
Note: Tradition 12: Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all these Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.
